he Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers has called on the Kenya National Examination Council (Knec) to immediately pay teachers who supervised and marked the national examinations their dues.
Narok County Kuppet Executive Secretary Charles Ngeno said it is wrong for Knec to continue withholding the teachers’ dues yet the exams have been administered, marked and released.
“The national examiner had pledged that teachers will be paid immediately the exam is released. It is now months after the exams were released yet the teachers have not received their allowances,” said Ngeno.
He spoke to the press in Narok town yesterday.
The unionist said candidates usually pay the examiner the examination fee early enough and Knec should not delay paying the teachers after they complete the exercise.
“Knec always have records of teachers invigilating and marking the exams. They need to wire this money into the teachers’ accounts without further delay,” he said.
At the same time, Ngeno has challenged the council to consider paying head teachers and their deputies center management allowance as they manage their schools during the examination period.
He said the heads of institutions always ensure that everything goes on well during the examination period.
“We want to ask Knec to consider paying head teachers this allowance because they are always asked to write a report should anything goes wrong during the examination time. This thus means the heads are always expected to be physically present throughout the examination time,” said Ngeno.
Ngeno said Knec has issued them with new roles other than what TSC has directed them to do hence need to be paid.
“Knec is a distinct body from TSC. Once heads of schools are assigned roles they must be paid an allowance. Knec issued them with a circular that defined roles clearly,” he said.
He said head teachers who are professionally contracted by the council as examiners, monitor officers or trainers are entitled to payment so should those manning examination centers.
The unionist also challenged the council to pay practical allowance for technical subject teachers.
“This cadre of teachers organizes the laboratories so that practical are conducted well. If it is true that Knec takes over the examination centers then it means these teachers are then under the council,” said Ngeno.
