On Thursday, the Kremlin alleged Ukraine had shot down a military transport plane transporting dozens of Ukrainian captives on their way to a prisoner swap in a “monstrous act”.

“It is, of course, a monstrous act,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said of the IL-76 plane, which Russia claims was carrying 65 Ukrainian soldiers and shot down by Ukraine on Wednesday.

“No-one can say what impact this will have” on extending a prisoner exchange program, he said.

Russia’s defense ministry claimed Ukrainian soldiers stationed in the Kharkiv border region launched two missiles at the plane, calling the incident a “terrorist act”.

Kyiv has not verified or disputed the Russian allegation.
