A former Chief Justice (CJ) who headed the Judiciary during retired President Daniel Moi‘s regime has passed on.

Justice Abdul Majid Cockar, who was one of Kenya’s most respected Chief Justices, died on Monday morning at his Karen home in Nairobi.

He was later in the afternoon buried at the Kariokor cemetery in line with his Islamic faith.

However, details on the cause of his death have remained scanty though reports point at age-related complications.

Among those who eulogised him is incumbent CJ David Maraga who promised that the Judiciary would hold a special sitting in Cockar’s honour.

“Former colleagues in the legal profession agree that Justice Cockar has left an indelible footprint in Kenya as a former public servant, lawyer, judge and family man. His 44 years in the legal profession will remain a beacon of motivation for many in the Bar and the Bench,” stated Maraga.

Justice Cockar served between 1994 and 1997 before being replaced by the late Zacchaeus Chesoni. He was survived by his wife Fahmida Cocker and two children.

In 2012, the 93-year old launched his autobiography titled “Doings, Non-doings and Mis-doings” which was highly hailed by immediate former Head of Judiciary Dr Willy Mutunga.

The deceased was described as an honourable man of law, an author and a successful athlete.
