Nyahururu – A pastor and his wife Monday treated a Nyahururu court to a drama when they broke down over a KES 100 000 bond demanded for his release.
It is alleged that Samuel Kipsang Maina broke into Savanna Bar at Junction area in Laikipia on August 15 night and made away with 3 bottles of beer, 6 bottles of soda, 2 packets of cigarettes and KES 750 coins belonging to James Ndichu, all totaling to KES 1 440.
He denied the charges when he appeared before resident magistrate Willy J. Cheruiyot and pleaded for mercy saying he could not raise the bail.
“Pardon me! Your honour, Pardon me!” wailed the Pastor, as his wife who was part of the court’s audience shouted that they were poor and could not afford the bond to secure his release.
His accomplice, Antony Chege on the other hand pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to 6 months jail without an option of fine.
The court further heard that Chege was spotted drunk while carrying the items at the neighbouring King’uka village.
Chege, who had been badly wounded by a mob that accosted him, pleaded for leniency saying that he had learnt his lesson and won’t repeat.
He told the court that he was a farmhand to the Pastor.
The case against the Pastor will be heard on September 3.
