Nairobi – The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has threatened to sue the Inspector General of Police, Joseph Boinett over the teargasing of Langata Road primary school in 2015.
The pupils had organized a demonstration against the grabbing of their playground land on January 19.
Television footage showed children, some being carried away, writhing in pain, screaming and choking because of the tear-gas. Police officers later brought dogs to the playground.
Elijah Mwangi, who was in charge of the police officers at the school, said he was following orders.
Opposition politician Eliud Owalo said that the playground had been grabbed to construct a parking lot for Weston hotel, which is linked to the Deputy President William Ruto, adjacent to the school.
Five pupils got injured in the incident, Citizen TV reports, but were treated and discharged.
In a report launched by LSK Friday, it was established that police used excessive, unreasonable and disproportionate force in the incident.
According to Daily Nation, the LSK recommends that action be taken against the IG and officers involved.
They also recommend police officers to go through training on how to uphold children rights when enforcing the law.
