Police officers attached to Mandera Governor Ali Roba’s security detail on Monday night engaged Al-Shababb militants in a fierce shootout.
During the attack, a watchman at a local primary school was hit by a stray bullet and died on the spot, the Nationreports.
According to police, the bodyguard met four women clad in bui bui as they drove in the town and stopped thinking that they needed help only to realise they were planning to attack.
“They acted as if they wanted help but soon I realised they were armed and dangerous, a shoot-out ensued and in the process, a night guard at a nearby premise was shot dead,” the officer disclosed.
Gunshots, explosions were heard in the town during the exchange.
On September 22, Al-Shabaab raided a police post in Garissa County where they stole guns, uniforms and a land cruiser before disappearing to Somali.
During the incident, two police officers went missing, it later emerged that they had been killed and their bodies paraded in Somali by the militants.
