Gor Mahia fans arrested over hooliganism during a league match on Sunday have been ordered to deposit bonds of Sh50,000 each to secure their freedom.
The 19 fans may face a more serious charge of causing grievous harm, depending on the outcome of a medical report on a victim of the violence, who suffered multiple leg fractures.
Dressed in replicas of the club’s white-and-green jersey, the youths, looking subdued, denied creating a disturbance, going around in public armed with stones and assault.
The prosecution said they were arrested along Haile Selassie and Moi avenues on Sunday after violence broke out during a match between Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards.
They were accused of stoning innocent motorists and passers-by and assaulting Valentine Ngugi. The charge may be amended “as both Ngugi’s legs were broken” and he is still in hospital, a prosecutor said.
A conviction for causing grievous harm attracts life imprisonment.
Mr Jack Odhiambo, the fans’ lawyer, believes they are innocent victims of circumstances.
A minor among the suspects was released on condition that he returns to court with evidence that he is a schoolboy.
The hearing begins on November 19.
