Kenya Airways will retrench 80 staff starting on Friday, CEO Mbuvi Ngunze says.
Speaking to News24 on phone, Ngunze stated that the company has been forced to streamline operations meaning job cuts and losses.
Ngunze stated that the operation called ‘Pride’ will save the company millions of shillings that will save as much as KES 20 billion in costs.
He said the operation Pride will deliver USD 200 million dollars as the airline had cut down on expenditures, sale and sublease of aircraft, the reduction of waste in catering, and renegotiation of some contracts.
“We have made some difficult decisions to make real changes in all aspects of our business, including reducing our fleet in line with the current fiscal realities. It is in this light that we announced our intention to right-size the organisation to align with the reduced fleet size and improve the productivity of our staff across the network,” he said.
The airline has been in loss making territory for the last three years and Ngunze says that it must change.
” We are confident that the changes made will show positively on the organisation as a whole and improve the stature of this great institution,” he added.
The airline is looking to retrench as many as 500 employees over the next 12 months.
