The government has introduced a new levy on kerosene in a bid to curb fuel adulteration.
While reading the 2016/17 budget, the Treasury Cabinet Secretary announced the re-introduction of excise duty on Kerosene, driving the retail price of the commodity up by KES 6.
The CS said the removal of the levy in 2011 negatively affected the oil industry as it gave oil marketers the leeway to start using kerosene to adulterate petrol and diesel.
This rise in kerosene prices is likely to drive commodity prices and transport costs up, as well as making life harder for poor families who rely on kerosene for fuel.
However, Daily Nation reports that the government has lowered the prices of stoves by lowering import duty on the product by 15 per cent.
