Nyeri governor Nderitu Gachagua has actually asked Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) to update their education and learning in order to prosper in politics as well as leadership.
Gachagua urged the MCAs to enroll for degree programs at the local universities.
He expressed concerns that some MCAs were Form Four leavers while they are expected to oversight the County Government effectively.
“Living without a degree at this century is very unfortunate. MCAs should improve their standard of education because some are potential of working at County Executive Committees but they do not have academic papers,” said the governor.
Gachagua spoke at Outspan Hotel after swearing-in of two new executive secretaries, Erastus Muriuki (Education and ICT) and Lucy Wanyitu (Special Progarms, Youth and Gender).
Wanyitu was initially serving as a specially elected MCA representing persons living with disabilities while Muriuki was Principal at Ihithe High School.
The governor applauded Wanyitu saying she landed the appointment and subsequently approved because of her education.
He however told her that he wants his government to have serious engagement with the PWDs, youth and women.
“Lead positively to address the issue of women empowerment. Without these special groups I wonder what kind of business we would be doing. We have set aside KES.50 million for them,” he stated.
On education, Gachagua asked the new executive to ensure that the 42 polytechnics in the County have been improved and absorb more youths for technical courses.
“We have selected eight polytechnics which are being upgraded to centres of excellence. We want o deliver into the job market by releasing artisan graduates with adequate knowledge and skills,” he said.
