Ibrahim Mahama, Ghanaian Businessman Who Built West Africa's Largest Indigenous-owned Mining Company

Ibrahim Mahama, a Ghanaian business magnate and entrepreneur, is the founder and owner of Engineers and Planners, a heavy-duty equipment rental company situated in Accra, Ghana.

His company rents to large mining corporations and road constructors in Ghana and other African countries. When Mahama returned to Ghana from England in 1997, he realized that the country’s mining and construction industries needed equipment.

He subsequently took advantage of the opportunity to make a career by renting heavy-duty equipment to contractors. His big break came when he obtained a subcontract to supply Razel-Bec with trucks for the construction of Accra’s Ako Adjei Interchange.

“It’s intriguing. We didn’t even have the amount of trucks required by the contract at the time, but we made do,” he told Emy Africa.

Engineers and Planners is the largest entirely indigenous mining and construction contracting company in West Africa and one of the largest in Africa three decades later. Furthermore, his firm employs around 3000 individuals.

Following in the footsteps of prominent entrepreneurs such as Aliko Dangote, Mahama has broadened his investments to include agriculture. He is the driving force behind Asutuare Poultry Farms, which produces hundreds of thousands of eggs and 10,000 live broilers per day. He also owns Man Bosch Ghana (MBG) Ltd, a MAN truck and heavy-duty equipment merchant.

He recently established Dzata Cement, Ghana’s first entirely indigenous cement factory. He started building the factory in 2011. According to the company’s website, the factory would create 1,200 direct jobs and have a manufacturing capacity of 2 million tonnes of cement per year.

Mahama’s entrepreneurial achievements have earned him worldwide acclaim. In London, he earned the 2018 African Achievers’ Award for African Industrialist of the Year. He has also received the EMY Africa award.

Mahama was born in Piase, Ghana, to Emmanuel Adama Mahama, who served as the country’s first Northern Regional Minister under Kwame Nkrumah. Joyce Tamakloe, his mother, is from Keta in Ghana’s Volta Region. He is also the brother of former Ghanaian President John Mahama. Many claim his success was easy because of his family’s history, but Mahama told Emy Africa that he excelled because he took risks and was open to learning, in addition to choosing the perfect relationship.

He traveled to the United Kingdom after finishing his secondary education at Ghana Senior High School, Tamale, in the Northern Region, to study at the College of North London. After college, he worked for a property development company in London before returning to Ghana.

In Ghana, Mahama co-founded the Joyce Tamakloe Cancer Foundation to generate cash for cancer-fighting hospitals.
