London – Several families have evacuated their homes in Hertfordshire town in the UK after a 20m wide sinkhole appeared overnight.

According to the Guardian, power and water has been cut off to the homes near the sinkhole.

Families living near Hertfordshire town in Fontmell Close heard a crash during the night and when they looked out saw that the road had given way and collapsed.

It is believed that the hole is 10m deep.

Authorities are at a loss as to what caused the collapse. According to the service’s watch commander, John Hudnott a water leak may not have caused the damage.

Sky News, reports that it could take months before the road is repaired.

A 12m hole opened up in Manchester in August, causing a major route near the city to be shutdown.
