Approximately 20 individuals are reported to have actually been killed in Ukpabi Nimbo, an agricultural area in Enugu State, adhering to an assault organized by Fulani ranchers on Monday.
According to Punch, over 100 armed cattle rearers stormed the community, killing indiscriminately and razing buildings in the process.
Prior to the attack, reports had indicated that the group of herdsmen had been recruiting gunmen from Nasarawa in preparation for the deadly ambush.
Many of the villagers escaped to the nearby Uzo-Uwani area, where many of the natives in the community are fearing for their safety in light of more attacks.
Five corpses have been recovered thus far, with many more expected to be discovered.
Ebere Amaraizu, PR Officer for the Enugu State Command, confirmed the attack but stated that the exact number of casualties has not yet been ascertained.
The attack is suspected to be part of a revenge plot on the community, who were resistant in allowing the herdsmen to use their land for grazing purposes.
Despite members of the community having informed both the State Government and the State Police Command of the impending attack, little was done to curb the violence that later ensued.
