Fear has gripped Nyeri County residents following reports that outlawed group, Mungiki, has resurfaced its operations in the region.
County commissioner Onesmus Musyoki said the group is operating in matatu terminus and is oppressing transport businessmen.
Musyoki claimed that the illegal group, made of young men, is extorting illegal security fees from entrepreneurs and that it is taking control of Public Service Vehicles (PSV) sector within towns.
The group members are said to be in operation during morning and evening hours.
“Businessmen should support police officers in the fight against the illegal groups by volunteering information. The young men are also destructing passengers and that will not be allowed,” said Musyoki while sending a warning to members of the illegal group.
The group, mostly based in Central Kenya, is known and feared for its furtive actions of killing those who fail to comply with their orders.
Governor Nderitu Gachagua has, thus, urged police to enhance security and eliminate all forms of crime and anti-social evils in the County.
“We have provided eight land rovers to the police, with one vehicle for each Sub-County and a number of cars to the CID,” said Gachagua.
The governor vowed to work closely with the national government in all areas of public service delivery.
