Convicted fraudster Yusuf Omarjee is understood to have been driving along Maydon Road in the early evening when his car was fired upon.
It is thought he lost control and crashed into a truck with the alleged gunmen disappearing into the night.
Police spokesperson major Thulani Zwane confirmed police had attended the scene of the shooting and accident.
“A male was driving along Maydon Road in Bayhead when a double-cab bakkie with an unknown number of occupants allegedly followed him and fired multiple shots towards him.”
“He sustained gunshot wounds; lost control of his vehicle due to the injuries and collided into a truck. The suspects then fled.”
Zwane said the victim was rushed to hospital by ambulance.
“The motive of the attack is unknown at this stage. A case of attempted murder was opened at Maydon Wharf police station for investigation and no arrest has been made at this stage,” he said.
Rescue Care spokesperson Garrith Jamieson confirmed medics had responded to the scene.
“We cannot provide personal details of the injured patient, as we are bound to safeguard his privacy and dignity. We can however say we treated a seriously injured man and transported him to a city hospital in a stable condition.”
The Mercury newspaper had reported Omarjee, who defrauded banks of about R39m, was given a suspended sentence and a R2.5m fine in the Durban Regional Court in 2010.
He was arrested in 2008 along with his wife Farhana and charged with 162 counts of fraud, following the arrest of a man – allegedly with al-Qaeda links – for selling fraudulent ID documents.
Omarjee pleaded guilty to 162 counts of fraud and corruption.
