Drunkards Raid School, Beat Up Teachers Who Were Caning Pupils

A group of men who were drinking near Mabe primary school in western Uganda district of Kibale got wild and attacked teachers who were caning students at the school.

According to one of the teachers, Ambrose Atika, they were disciplining pupils who had failed to hand in homework under a tree Wednesday when the incident happened.

Atika said: ”We were punishing some primary six pupils who had failed to do homework we had given them two days ago. We were giving each two strokes.”

He said that all was going well when one of the girls lined up for disciplining started wailing even before she was struck.

”Immediately the teacher raised the cane, she shouted so loud that even people in the neighborhood heard her cry,” said Atika.

A group of 10 men who were taking local brew at a bar near the school heard the cry and attacked the teachers with sticks. They beat the two teachers who were punishing the pupils accusing them of mistreating their children before attacking other teachers in the staff-room.

The children shouted with excitement as their teachers fled for safety.

Some teachers later went to report the incident to police.

By the time the police arrived, the drunkards had left the school and could not be traced.
