DRC’s government has called on international partners to demonstrate positive co-operation days after the European Union expressed concern over reports of intimidation against political opponents, civil society and media in the country.
Government spokesperson Lambert Mende on Thursday denied accusations that the rights of DRC’s citizens are not being observed and said the correct judicial systems are in place.
The EU said this week that respect for human rights is crucial for transparent elections. The United Nations has denounced what it calls arbitrary arrests of opponents and activists and the US has expressed concern about legal action against pro-democracy activists.
DRC is slated to hold elections in November.
The opposition worries that President Joseph Kabila, meant to leave office in December, will postpone the election timeline to stay in power.
