Cyclone Gamane Hits Madagascar, Kills at Least 11, Displaces Thousands

Officials claimed that at least 11 persons were killed as Cyclone Gamane made landfall in northern Madagascar.

The hurricane was expected to pass over the Indian Ocean island, but it reversed direction and damaged hundreds of buildings.

Aerial images showed inundated settlements and people attempting to rescue victims from their flooded homes.

The devastating cyclone struck northeast Madagascar in two days, displacing more than 18,000 people and leaving three others missing, according to a study released late Thursday by the National Bureau of Risk and Disaster Management (BNGRC).

The authority further reported that the storm was traveling at an average speed of 150 km/h with gusts of 210 km/h.

Cyclone Freddy slammed the island nation last month, killing four people and left immense wreckage in its wake. The cyclone swept up several dwellings, affecting about 16,600 Malagasy, with approximately 4,500 buildings flooded or destroyed.
