Bloemfontein – An application by 94 community health workers to have charges relating to a sit-in at the Free State Health Department dismissed, was denied in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday morning.177 health workers were arrested a year ago, but charges against 23 of them were dismissed on Monday after they agreed to arbitration.
The workers staged a peaceful night vigil on July 10 last year to protest against their contracts being terminated.
Magistrate Zukiswa Thafeni ruled that she found nothing wrong with the charges against the accused.
The Treatment Action Campaign had also earlier requested that the National Prosecuting Authority drop the charges against the 117 workers, but this request was dismissed.
The case, which has been scheduled from Monday to Thursday, continues.
