The fact that the now embattled Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission is yet to be cleared by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission over the multi-million shillings corruption scam scandal (translate ‘chickengate’) brought to the limelight by the British Serious Fraud Office way-back in 2014, is reason enough to cast justifiable doubts regarding the integrity of the electoral body.
That former presidential aspirants such as Peter Kenneth, Martha Karua, Musalia Mudavafdi and James Ole Kiyapi, and the trio of Raila, Kaalonzo and Wetangula, have since called for the disbandment of the IEBC, raises a red flag over the competence of the electoral body.
Churches unions, NGOs, and even the LSK (Law Society of Kenya) have also not hidden their worries over the electoral body.
With the August 2017 General Elections almost a stone’s throw-away distance, there is no doubt that unless something tangible is done regarding the commission mandated by the Kenya Constitution 2010 to deliver a credible, free and fair election, I fear there could be trouble. BIG TROUBLE!
Already the rungu-wielding FANYA FUJO UJIONEE boys are engaging the CORD chief lieutenants in a naughty street-chasing game in the IEBC offices.
That CORD Co-Principals have even gone ahead and called for countrywide protests is reason enough to prepare our sorry selves for a classical repeat of 2007/2008!
Nevertheless, as echoed by the Head of State the other day, as much as CORD has the right to exercise its democratic rights, such privileges must be done within the confines of the rule of the law.
Raila, Kalonzo, Wetangula and others should lead by example by embracing the proper channels as far as re-constitution IEBC Commission Members is concerned.
And this can be done by presenting a petition to the National Assembly setting out the alleged facts constituting grounds of removal namely gross misconduct or for physical or mental incapacity to perform the functions of their office, and, or gross incompetence or bankruptcy.
