Cabinet has described Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa’s visit to Japan as “successful” – despite ongoing controversy about him using a Gupta-owned plane for the trip.
“Cabinet welcomed the successful visit of Deputy President Ramaphosa to Japan. He was accompanied by a high-level ministerial and business delegation to promote South Africa as a preferred investment destination,” read a statement released on Friday following a Cabinet meeting.
It said Ramaphosa used the opportunity to “reassure” Japanese investors that South Africa “was open for business”.
He briefed them on our “sound macro-economic stability and conducive business environment for investment, particularly in ventures that create jobs”.
On Friday morning, Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula confirmed that Ramaphosa used a plane owned by the Gupta family, which has close links to President Jacob Zuma, to visit Japan because there were no state planes available.
