A blogger has been arrested for spreading malicious ‘lies’ against the now collapsed Chase Bank.
David Zawadi a blogger based in Nairobi will be charged with spreading falsehoods over the Bank’s situation to the public and in the end forcing its demise thanks to mass withdrawals from customers.
According to Police, he has broken several code of public information laws and must pay for it.
“Some unscrupulous members of the public have taken to social media to spread unfounded rumours and conjecture aimed at causing unnecessary fear and panic,” IG Joseph Boinnet said.
He said that the government would not allow the public to be misled over such a key sector as the financial one.
“It’s one thing to alert acquaintances about matters that are truthful and factual, but we shall not allow persons driven to malicious consideration to peddle falsehoods to mislead the public,” he added.
Central Bank Governor Patrick Njoroge said on Thursday after sending the bank into receivership that massive withdrawals by Chase Bank customers were fuelled by “malicious” social media reports.
