Sydney – An Australian navy ship seized and destroyed nearly half a ton of heroin valued at $91m hidden in a fishing boat in the northern Indian Ocean, the ship’s captain said on Wednesday.

The captain of the HMAS Melbourne, Commander Bill Waters, said he sent a search party onto the vessel after he saw the crew on the dhow acting suspiciously.

The heroin packages weighing a total of 427kg were transferred to the HMAS Melbourne where they were analysed and destroyed.

“So far this year the Royal Australian Navy has seized nearly two tons of heroin while deployed in Middle Eastern waters,” Waters said in a Defence Department statement.

The frigate had just arrived in the north Indian Ocean as part of an international force conducting maritime security in the Middle East
