Nigeria: KWASU Deputy Bursar Dies After Watching Nigeria and South Africa AFCON Match

Ayuba Olaitan Abdullahi, Deputy Bursar of Kwara State University (KWASU) Malete, died on Wednesday night while watching Nigeria’s semi-final play against South Africa at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Nigeria won the tight encounter 4-2 on penalties after it finished 1-1 in normal and extra time.

According to sources, Abdullahi died after going to watch the play at a sports center in the Sango district, which was close to his home.

According to the source, Ayuba watched the game till the end of extra time when he became uneasy and was brought to a private hospital in the vicinity, where he passed away.

“The deputy bursar watched the Nigeria/South Africa match from the start to the end of extra time, and when it came time for the penalty kicks, he complained about feeling dizzy and stated he needed to go home and relax, unaware that his blood pressure had risen.

“So, on getting home, he collapsed and he was rushed to a private hospital in Sango and he was referred to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) and before he could be attended to, he died,” a person familiar with the matter said.

He was buried on Thursday morning, according to Islamic customs.

KWASU’s Director of Information, Saedat Aliyu, also verified the development.

“Yes, he died last night.” On Wednesday, he was in good health and full of energy at his office. May Almighty Allah give him Aljanah Firdaus,” she said.

“This is to announce the death of Mr. Ayuba Olaitan Abdullahi of the Bursary Department,” the institution added in a separate statement signed by Saedat.

“Janazah will take place this morning, and his bones will be interred at the Hausa Muslim cemetery in Apata Yakuba, Oyun district, Ilorin, at 9 a.m. May Allah pardon all of his faults and grant him Aljannah Firdaus. Aameen.”
