A Johannesburg minibus taxi driver has been arrested for allegedly abducting and robbing a couple.
Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officers stopped the driver in Yeoville at roughly 21:30 on Sunday.
“The driver of the vehicle immediately jumped out and approached the officers. Whilst they were still talking, officers noticed a commotion coming from the taxi. When officers checked what was transpiring, two males jumped out of the taxi and fled the scene,” said JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla.
Inside the taxi, officers found two passengers – a man and a woman – who alleged that they had been forced into the taxi at gunpoint.
“Officers noticed that the man was profusely bleeding from the left side of his head. He informed officers that he was hit with the butt of a firearm,” Fihla added.
The officers found a firearm inside the vehicle and a set of vehicle registration plates.
“Upon further inquiry, it was established that the number plates that were affixed on the vehicle were actually number plates of a different vehicle,” Fihla added.
The driver was detained at the Hillbrow police station for kidnapping, robbery, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, possession of an unlicensed firearm and fraud.
