Women In Eastern Libya Banned From Traveling Without A Male Guardian

Authorities in Eastern Libya have issued a ban that restricts women from traveling outside the country without a male guardian according to a report by AP

The Libyan Chief of Staff Abdel-Razek al-Nadhouri, military ruler of eastern Libya appointed by army chief Khalifa Hifter who is allied with the internationally recognized parliament issued the ban on Thursday.

“It is ridiculous that in 2017 we discuss if it is ok for women under 60 years to travel without a guardian male who might be 20,” activist Imam Bugaighis tweeted.

Airport authorities have said that the decision hasn’t been put into effect.

According to BBC Africa, Libyan authorities say that women representing civil society groups, who frequently travel abroad for work, are being used by foreign intelligence agencies.
