Days, after two Governors were grilled by the CID over inflammatory remarks made with regard to the appointment of ‘outsiders’ at Moi University, another Governor in the region, is on the spot over alleged inflammatory remarks.
Kericho Governor Paul Chepkwony on Sunday warned the Kikuyu community against failing on its ‘promise’ to support Deputy President William Ruto in 2022.
Speaking at St Theresa Catholic Church in Konoin, Chepkwony indicated that the Kalenjin community would be supporting President Uhuru Kenyatta’s re-election bid in 2017 with knowledge that their gesture will be reciprocated in 2022.
“We are now in Jubilee and behind Uhuru and Ruto. But in 2022, as per our agreement, we will want Mt Kenya to reciprocate the gesture by backing us. We have no doubt they will do it. Chepkwony, however, warned that failure by the Mt Kenya region to support Ruto in 2022 will be met with “serious repercussions”, the Kericho Governor said.
While it’s not clear the exact nature of the repercussions, the governor’s remarks have raised fears with a section of Kenyans terming them inflammatory.
The Rift Valley has a long history of election-related violence with the worst incident being in the 20007/08 period.
It is not clear at what point the Mt Kenya community made a deal with their Kalenjin counterparts.
