The Chairman of the National Committee on Citizen Participation in Security, Joseph Kaguthi has asked Kenyans not so share terrorism messages on social media platforms.
Kaguthi said that terrorists are now engaging in psychological warfare and were using well-crafted and written messages and videos to spread propaganda on how their fighters were defeating Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) soldiers.
Speaking in Murang’a, Kaguthi said that psychops is a well known military tactic and that is what the Al-shabaab and ISIS are using to capture the minds of the people and spread maximum fear.
“We are requesting public not to share stories and documentaries on terrorism but instead delete them immediately after receipt,” said Kaguthi.
Addressing the press after the training of over 150 chiefs from 15 counties on the Nyumba Kumi initiative, Kaguthi called on Kenyans to propagate positive messages on the success of the Kenyan security forces.
“The military get their motivation from the citizens and when we spread the messages of how the Al-Shabaab is winning, we are demoralizing our soldiers,” he explained.
“We are putting up these cautionary messages on YouTube, through faith based organizations, so that people can understand how the children are being recruited into terror groups,” said Kaguthi.
He cautioned that churches, schools and universities were targeted recruitment grounds and advised parents to be cautious about their children’s activities.
On the training of chiefs, Kaguthi said chiefs would be enlightened on the use of social media in sharing information with the members of the public.
