A study conducted by Agency for Cooperation and Research (ACORD), an NGO, stated that women in certain parts of the country were facing challenges in financing their campaigns.
ACORD Director, Wasai Kululu, said that women were increasingly facing challenges in securing finances for their campaigns.
Speaking during the launch of two thirds Gender Rule Project Launch at Mabanga, Bungoma County, Mr Kululu said many at ties omen have had major challenges in securing credit and as such it was more difficult for them to get political funding.
Mr Kululu added that the women were finding it hard to compete with their male counterpart because of the current political system.
He stated that our politics was structured to lure voters with money rather than their policies which were a major disadvantage to women political candidates.
Mr Kululu further added that they were working to ensure that the women were placed with mentors to help them properly plan their campaigns.
Rural Peace Link Women Executive Director, Emma Mogaka, stated that they had started a programme to ensure that political parties release money equitably to women during campaigns.
Ms Mogaka added that this would be a major boost to the women in order to increase their representation in the County and National Assemblies.
She added that her organization was working to ensure that women candidates in the counties are placed under political mentors in a bid to see more women elected to various positions throughout the country.
The two organisations chose Bungoma County as one of the counties to conduct their program as it has never elected a female MP since independence and had quite a low number of female elected MCAs.Ends
