The Minister of Petroleum Resources, and Group Managing Director of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, Ibe Kachikwu, said that job creation was the only solution to totally wipe out pipeline vandalism in Niger Delta, Vanguard reports.
Kachikwu said that the Federal Government needed to create an environment to empower the militants, enabling them to find jobs and create business.
Due to the high amounts of bombing and vandalism to pipelines in the area, it is estimated that it would take 15 to 20 years to fully rebuild the infrastructure and oil sector.
Kachikwu added that giving the militants opportunities in the sector was the only way forward to eradicate the vandalism while at the same time rebuild the sector.
Talks are set to take place this week with the Niger Delta Avengers to come to a truce to end the pipeline vandalism.
The vandalism in Niger Delta nearly completely crippled the oil sector in Nigeria, forcing huge scarcity of petrol throughout the country.
