Almost 80 per cent of all university and mid-level college students in Kenya are abusing drugs, Nacada boss John Mututho has said.
According to Mututho, most university students are being lured into using drugs by their friends.
He further added that the number may rise if action is not taken urgently.
Speaking in Naivasha on Wednesday, Mututho said that NACADA has spelt out strict rules to tame drug abuse in institutions of higher learning.
“It is saddening to learn that almost over 82 per cent of our young people in colleges and universities in Kenya abuse drugs. This is a very serious and dangerous trend and if nothing is done then soon we might end up having a drunk, educated and intoxicated nation,” said Mututho.
Mututho warned that NACADA will be forced to shut down private colleges and universities found to have students who abuse drugs, or sell them off and using the money rehabilitate the affected students.
