The CORD Coalition has ended the much publicized IEBC protests. But why?
After weeks of street demonstrations and brutality as well as a number of deaths, the Coalition decided to end the protests Wednesday and give dialogue a chance in the matter seeking to institute electoral changes.
The reasons for the end of the protests are three fold.
First, the death of three protesters in Kisumu and Siaya Monday prompted the CORD leader to seek a fresh approach to his calls, as the loss of lives was not on his agenda, sources say.
“He was shocked to hear people died and is trying to stop more by trying a different approach for now,” a CORD source told News24.
Secondly, the international community had ramped up pressure on the CORD leader to end the protests and look at dialogue, saying he should seek boardroom level talks to end the continuing chaos.
“The International community was on Raila’s case. He just had to end the protests for now,” the source added.
Finally, a willingness by State House to have dialogue was the last piece of the puzzle with President Uhuru Kenyatta said to be willing to talk things over.
“The President was willing to talk about what has been going on and seek dialogue and that was the communication from State House as late as Tuesday,” the source continued.
The IEBC protests have been taking place every Monday for the last four weeks.
