Christians Wary Jonathan’s Arrest Could Spark Nigeria Strife

Plans by the Muhammadu Buhari administration to arrest his predecessor, Goodluck Jonathan, will result in mayhem, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has warned.

In a statement, Reverend Joseph Hayab, CAN’s Public Relations Officer in the northern states and the FCT, said calls for the arrest of Jonathan were coming from “mischievous” Nigerians aimed at throwing the country into chaos.

“Every honest Nigerian knows that the feelers on the ground are that this administration’s popularity is dwindling rapidly among the Nigerian people,” Hayab warned.

“It is therefore not advisable to think or plan to arrest former president Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. Let me warn that such a misadventure will set a wrong precedent and only open door for mischief people to set this nation into confusion.”

Power supply challenges

Hayab argued the probe against Jonathan over alleged corruption and misrule was not a priority.

“What Nigerians need urgently is availability of fuel, electricity, prompt salary payment, security of lives and property, among others.”

CAN alleged the selective application of the law under the guise of the crusade against corruption led by Buhari.

“Our government must know that there are individuals serving today that have also been accused of corruption, but since there are claims that nothing has been established against them, they are walking and speaking like saints,” said Hayab.

He argued power supply challenges, the crisis sparked by Fulani herdsmen and economic decline must be a priority than probing Jonathan.

“We believe at this time and with the current realities our former president must not be denigrated but honoured, because honour must be given to whom it is due.”
