Nakuru – At least 16 inmates have taken ill at the Nakuru GK prison in what is suspected to be a tuberculosis (TB) outbreak.
According to the prison’s senior officer James Sawe, the 16 complained of severe chest pains before they were rushed to the Nakuru PGH hospital where they were confirmed to have TB.
Speaking at the facility on Tuesday, Sawe said the TB outbreak could have been caused by overcrowding at the correctional facility.
“We have a capacity of handling only 700 inmates but as we speak, we have over 1 000 inmates in our facility and this is the main cause of this TB problem,” said Sawe.
Sawe however said that the situation has been put under control and there is no need for alarm.
“Our officers have put the situation under control and everything is back to normal therefore we need not to worry,” he said.
