Nairobi – The government has refused to remit monthly fees to teachers unions as the ongoing strike gathers momentum.
Kenya National Union of Teachers KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion admits that thew government is yet to remit its usual monthly contribution to the unions as the conflict over the ongoing teachers strike gets ugly.
From teachers’ monthly remittances, KNUT is due KES 131 million every month from the Teachers Service Commission TSC, while the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers KUPPET is due KES 32 million.
But with teachers yet to be paid their September salaries, TSC has refused to play ball and Sossion says that they will fight he move hard.
” The government is playing hardball but we will not be cowed,” he told News24.
” Yes, they are trying to cripple us knowing we need to pay lawyers for the ongoing court case but we are going to keep on moving forward,” he added.
The move comes as the strike enters its 6th week next week and the TSC in its desperation to ensure that the education sector is not crippled, has resorted to trying to recruit 70,000 teachers to ensure things continue to run smoothly.
A High Court order though has stopped the TSC from the recruitment, even though the merit of it, as seen previously will be hard to see, given that the TSC has ignored court orders previously.
