Who Will Win Contest for Nigeria’s 3rd Most Powerful Post?

With Muhammadu Buhari installed as Nigeria’s president, the politics focus shifts to the election of Senate president, the second in the line of succession after the vice president. The leading candidiate is Bukola Saraki, Senator and former governor of Kwara State. Supporters say he will effectively support Buhari’s legislative priorities and point to his ongoing attack on alleged fraud related to the country’s oil subsidy as evidence he shares an anti-corruption agenda. Also contesting for the powerful post is Ahmed Lawan from Yobe State.

The aspiration of Sen. Bukola Saraki to become the Senate president received a boost as a serving senator from the Sokoto East Senatorial district, Eng. Dr. Ibrahim Abdullahi Sardauna Gobir, threw his weight behind the bid.

This was contained in a statement made available to LEADERSHIP Friday yesterday.

According to the lawmaker, the nomination of Senator Bukola Saraki as Senate president was in view of his good record of services, being a man of the people, visionary leader with vast experience and foresight.

The lawmaker stressed that if Bukola Saraki is chosen as the Senate president of the 8th National Assembly, the upper chamber would witness rapid development, especially at this very challenging time of higher expectations from the electorate.

  1. As a Yoruba man, I do not support a Yoruba to be the Senate President. The APC has a Yoruba man as Obasanjo( the founder of the Party), Tinubu as the leader of the Party, APC, John Oyegun as the Chairman (Warri). Is there a hidden agenda that is not known?
The Senate Presidency and the Speaker of the House should go to the Northeastern and Southeastern States respectively; irrespective of who voted where. That is how to unite a country and move it forward. Whether Saraki can work with Buhari or not, any Senate President or Speaker of the House of Representative can still work with the President.
