Unlicensed Zim driver went on the run while handcuffed: Reports

Harare – A Zimbabwean man has been arrested in Victoria Falls after he was found driving the car he won in a competition last year without a driver’s permit, state media reported on Monday.

Elton Nyathi, aged 23, admitted when he won the car in June last year he did not have a licence, but was planning to start driving lessons, the Chronicle reported.

It was not immediately clear whether Nyathi had started lessons and had not passed his test yet, or whether he had been driving since June with no permit at all.

The Chronicle reported that he escaped while being escorted to a police station on January 10. Nyathi was reportedly still in handcuffs when he gave police the slip. He was re-arrested a day later.

Nyathi would face charges of driving without a licence and escaping from custody.

Zimbabwe recently increased the on-the-spot fine for anyone found driving without a licence from $20 to $100.

According to the Herald newspaper, Nyathi spent the night with his handcuffs on.

“I guess the guy gave himself up after the suffering,” one Zimbabwean commented on the Chronicle online.
