UN Boss Wants President Uhuru Kenyatta To Go Slow On Refugees Repatriation.

The United Nations (UN) has cautioned the Kenyan government against closing down refugee camps in its ambitious plan to repatriate refugees.

According to sources, UN chief Ban Ki Moon called President Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday evening where the issue of refugees was discussed.

“The Secretary-General urged President Kenyatta to use the Tripartite Agreement, signed in November 2013 with the Federal Government of Somalia and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), as a basis for the voluntary return of Somali refugees in safety and dignity,” a statement from Moon’s spokesperson sent to newsrooms said.

The statement added that: “He expressed UN’s support to Kenya, including the proposal by the High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, that a high-level bilateral review on the refugee situation in Kenya be conducted by the government of Kenya and UNHCR.”

The Jubilee government through the PS Interior announced early this month that refugee camps will be closed down.

This has raised concerns with human rights activists who said Somalia, where Dadaap refugees come from, is not yet safe.
