Police in Pallisa District are investigating circumstances under which a burial ceremony turned chaotic, leaving two mourners lynched on allegations of poisoning a 28-year-old man.
The Bukedi region police spokesperson, Mr Sowali Kamulya, told Daily Monitor that residents had turned up to bury a one Micheal Kungulu who died from alleged poisoning. Mourners then attacked and killed Martin Omunugu and Augustine Okoboi over the poisoning claims.
“At the time of burial, information started spreading that the deceased was poisoned and that he had written a note naming the two as the culprits,” Mr Kamulya said.
He added that although police was called in to calm the situation, it was too late to save the suspects.
“This was unfortunate and regrettable. The bodies have been taken to Pallisa Hospital for a postmortem,” Mr Kamulya said.
He said police have on several occasions strongly condemned rising cases of mob justice which have become a common means of administering justice to suspects, more so in Pallisa District.
“As police, we strongly condemn mob justice as means of administering justice. People should always jointly work with relevant agencies especially police which is mandated to keep law and order. This is totally unacceptable and those implicated in inciting others will be dealt with accordingly,” said Kamulya.
