Police in Nyeri have shot dead two armed robbery suspects who were trying to rob a staff member of a macadamia nuts company along Nyeri-Karatina road.

One suspect however escaped with bullet wounds during the broad daylight robbery at Mahiga-ini Springs area.

A police officer and the macadamia company staff were seriously injured in the melee and are admitted at a Karatina hospital.

The three robbers who were using a Probox car had trailed the staff member who was riding a motorcycle from Karatina town.

At around 12 noon on Wednesday, they stopped him at the bumps and shot him in the stomach once before frisking him for money.

It was at that point that police officers who were on patrol along the road reached the scene and demanded to know what was happening.

But the thugs responded by firing gunshots, injuring one officer on the leg.

Mathira West OCPD, David Kemboi said the officers retaliated immediately, killing the two on the spot as the other escaped.

Police recovered an AK47 rifle, motorcycle and several rounds of ammunition.

Personal documents were also recovered from the scene.

Kemboi said the gang has been terrorising residents and businessmen at Mwea, Kirinyaga and Nyeri towns.

He noted that police have been pursuing them for the last one week since they have been on the wanted list.

Their bodies were taken to Karatina hospital mortuary.
