Durban – Police have deployed squads of tactical officers to KwaMashu A Section, which remains tense after a murder spree that left five people dead on Wednesday.

Police spokesperson colonel Jay Naicker confirmed that members of the Public Order Policing Unit, the Tactical Response Team and the National Intervention Unit had been placed on alert following the mass murder.

Shortly before 07:00 a group of gunmen stormed a room in the A95 Block at the KwaMashu Hostel and opened fire. Three of the occupants died instantly and one died whilst receiving medical attention.

The body of another victim was found lying outside the hostel, taking the toll to five.  Another man is in a critical condition.

A 9mm pistol was found next to the body outside the hostel.

“It is suspected that he was one of the attackers and was killed by an unknown person as he fled the scene,” said Naicker.

The incident took place shortly after a shooting at a taxi rank in Brook Street, Durban, about 20km away.

Three people were shot dead and six people hospitalised, News24 reported.

Paramedics said they had never seen so many automatic weapons on a scene.
