Celebrations erupted in Zimbabwe, primarily among ZANU-PF supporters, following the pronouncement of President Emmerson Mnangagwa as the winner of the recently ended election.
According to the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission, Mnangagwa, 80, received 52.6 percent of the votes cast, compared to 44 percent for the major rival, Nelson Chamisa, 45.
A few ruling party supporters cheered when the presidential results were announced at the press conference site.
This week, voting was forced to stretch into an unprecedented second day because of delays in printing of ballot papers in some key districts including the opposition stronghold Harare.
Chamisa condemned the delays as “a clear case of voter suppression, a classic case of Stone-Age… rigging”.
