Johnny Clegg’s son, well-known musician Jesse Clegg has spoken out about the void that his dad’s death has left in his life
The veteran musician died on Tuesday afternoon surrounded by family members at his Johannesburg home. Johnny was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2015.
Ever since news of the Impi hitmaker’s death was confirmed, social media has been flooded with tributes from across the globe in his honour.
Taking to social media, Jesse spoke about how his dad helped shape him as a musician and a man
“You have inspired me both as a musician and as a man, and given me the tools to live a meaningful life. I will miss you deeply and struggle to imagine a world without you.
“But I am comforted to know that your wisdom and compassion lives on in all of us. Hamba kahle Dad, be at peace. You have done so much and we honour you.”
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Johnny’s family requested fans to make donations to The Click Foundation, which runs online literacy programmes in underprivileged schools instead of sending or laying flowers.
Meanwhile, Johnny’s manager Roddy Quinn confirmed to SABC that he was buried on Wednesday after a private family funeral
He said that this was what “Johnny wanted”.
“I can confirm that Johnny Clegg was buried by his family at a small gathering of people, which was his family’s request and his request.
“We will be making an announcement perhaps at the end of the week about a memorial service, which everybody, the public will be invited to,” he said.
