Two women who defaced a war memorial in Uitenhage have been sentenced to 250 hours of community service each, Eastern Cape police said.
Vuyokazi Voxeka, 29, and Nombulelo Mkwena, 28, splashed white paint on part of the South African War Memorial, next to the Uitenhage town hall, on June 22, Warrant Officer Gerda Swart said in a statement.
Magistrate John Montgomery on Tuesday sentenced each of them to 30 months in prison, suspended for 5 years, and to 250 hours of community service.
The vandalism of statues around the country began when University of Cape Town students called for the removal of the colonial-era statue of Cecil John Rhodes from their campus earlier this year.
It was taken down in April.
