On Monday evening Afrikaans musician Kurt Darren sang the national anthem at a Varsity Cup game, however, his attempt has left many people wishing he hadn’t sung it.
The 49-year-old sang the national anthem ahead of the final between Maties and Tuks at the Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch.
Instead of everyone talking about the awesome game and the Maties victory all social media users can talk about is how Kurt “butchered” the national anthem by adding his own spice.
Kurt messed up certain words of the anthem resulting in some rather awkward faces being made as he proudly sang the anthem. Social media users were unimpressed with Kurt’s rendition, urging him to memorise the words.
Speaking to Jacaranda FM’s Martin Bester, Kurt acknowledged the error on his part, letting know that he ‘only got a few words wrong’.
Kurt also told Martin, that “it is a small issue, but now people make it into a massive issue.”

Kurt Darren proudly & confidently belting out made-up lyrics to the national anthem in a packed stadium is the best example of the kind of peak mediocrity nurtured by a corrupt racist state (& its continued legacy) ✌🏾️
