At least 11 al-Shabab militants were killed and six others injured on Tuesday in a fierce fighting with the Somali army in the Lower Shabelle region, the southern part of the country, a military official said on Wednesday.

Mohamed Tahlil Bihi, commander of the Somali infantry division, said the army conducted an operation in Dahab, Gal Salimo and Garas Gawan villages.

“We killed 11 al-Shabab militants including a senior leader and we also injured six others during an intense clash with them,” Bihi said.

He added that the forces destroyed the “so-called court” run by the militants.

The latest incident came amid sustained security operations by government forces against al-Shabab militants in the southern regions.
