Deputy President of the Biafra Nations Youth League, Ebuta Victor Takon, has been released from police custody but placed under watch.
The organisation’s President, Prince Chimezie Obuka, confirmed the development.
Takon had been arrested this past weekend under unclear circumstances, sparking fears this would worsen tensions around the protests for the independence of Biafra.
He was arrested in Ikom, Cross River State.
“He (Takon) has been freed and cannot be placed under watch because he is only exercising his right. I believe they are not comfortable with our strategic moves because they know where we are heading to and what we are trying to achieve but they will all fail in their bids to stop us,” said Obuka.
“They are afraid we will soon start operating like the defeated terrorist group Boko Haram that operates in the border area. We can never be like Boko Haram because we are not blood suckers like the Muslim (group) in the north.”
Obuka dissuaded security forces from arresting members of the youth group.
“On no account should such illegal arrest repeat itself next time otherwise they are looking for trouble.”
