The United Nation Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon through a telephone conversation has urged President Zuma to reconsider South Africa’s plan to withdraw from the International Criminal Court, SABC reports.
South Africa and Burundi notified the UN of their intent to withdraw from the Rome Statute, the 1998 treaty establishing The Hague-based court. The withdrawals will take effect in October 2017.
Gambia, towards the end of last week also said it planned to withdraw from the court but it has not yet notified the UN.
The decision to withdraw from ICC has been received with mixed reactions in South Africa.
The country’s relation with the ICC went sore after the government failed to arrest Sudanese president Omar al-Bashir who was attending an African Union summit in Johannesburg in 2015.
