One killed in Joburg taxi shooting

Johannesburg – A man was killed and another wounded when they were shot at by two armed men near the Market Theatre in Newtown, central Johannesburg on Friday afternoon, Gauteng police said.

There was conflicting information regarding the person who was killed.

Police spokesperson Captain Tshekiso Mofokeng said a taxi owner was killed during the incident which took place around 15:30. The wounded man was also linked to the taxi business, he said.

However, Netcare 911 spokesperson Athlenda Mathe, said the deceased was believed to have been a taxi driver.

She said the wounded man was taken to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

News24 understands that two armed men were seen fleeing the scene in a black Volkswagen Golf 7 shortly after the shooting.

Mofokeng said he could not provide further details until investigations were concluded.

He did however confirm that the shooting was linked to taxi related violence.
