Nairobi – Orange Democratic Movement ODM’s Malindi by-election candidate Willy Mtengo has dismissed as cheap propaganda reports his academic certificates are fake.
Mtengo told The Star those peddling claims of forged papers are malicious and “have sensed defeat” in the March 7 by-election.
He blamed the ruling Jubilee Coalition for spreading lies to ruin his campaign.
“I can tell you for sure my papers are in order and the record of schools I have gone to is well known,” he is quoted as saying. These cheap antics by Jubilee are because they know I’m winning the race. Let us meet at the ballot,” he added.
Mtengo is the odds on favourite to replace Dan Kazungu in Malindi after the former MP Joined the cabinet as Mining CS late last year.
The Daily Nation quotes his former High School principal as saying that there had earlier been no certification that Mtengo attended the Mombasa Baptist High School but that on later checking, there was confirmation that he had indeed done so.
In the report, principal Millicent Omondi made available a file indicating that Mr William Baraka Mtengo was admitted to Form One at the school in 1987 but did not complete his secondary education there. She could not say when he left and the circumstances.
The by-election has attracted eight candidates, among them Philip Charo of the Jubilee Party, Mr Reuben Mwamure (Kadu Asili), Mr Ahmed Mohamed (Agenda Party), Mr Yusuf Abubakar (Federal Party) and Mr Peter Ponda (Chama Cha Uzalendo).
CORD leaders will this weekend be in Malindi to campaign for Mtengo. They will be led by party chiefs Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka and Moses Wetangula
